My First Summit: High-Stakes Lesson on Lobuche E

In October 2021, I took on my first major climb—Lobuche East in the Everest region. This wasn't just another trek; it was my initiation into the challenging world of high-altitude mountaineering. Every step forward felt like a step into the unknown, as I was learning everything from scratch. The excitement surged through me, but so did the nerves. Months of preparation had led to this moment, but no amount of planning could have prepared me for the harsh reality I was about to face the unforgiving lesson of just how crucial the right gear can be in the mountains.

The Overlooked Detail: A Costly Mistake in Gear Preparation

A week before the climb, I had visited a gear shop in Kathmandu to select my boots, knowing that the right footwear is crucial in the mountains. I tried on a pair, found the perfect fit, and felt confident in my choice. The boots were delivered to my hotel room later, and in the rush of preparations, I packed them without double-checking. It wasn’t until I reached the high camp at Lobuche that I realized something was terribly wrong.

The Moment of Doubt: Facing a Summit in the Wrong Boots

On the night of the summit push, as I laced up my boots, I noticed they felt different—looser than they should have been. Panic set in as I discovered that the boots were a size larger than the pair I had selected. In that cold, unforgiving environment, I had no other options. I was devastated, cribbing and crying, my mind racing with excuses to call off the summit push. I even thought about what I would say if I failed to summit. The weight of the situation was crushing.

The Moment of Truth: Choosing to Push Forward

That’s when my mentor stepped in, offering a piece of wisdom that would stay with me forever: life often presents us with two options, and it’s up to us to choose the one that’s appropriate for the moment. My options were clear—either accept the situation and push forward, or turn back and retreat.

With a deep breath, I made my choice. I decided to push forward, despite the discomfort and fear gnawing at me. The climb was slow and painful. Blisters began to form on my feet and shins, a constant reminder of my mistake. But with each step, I learned an invaluable lesson: the importance of selecting the right gear and ensuring everything is in order well before setting off on an expedition.

A Summit of Growth: The Day That Transformed My Climbing Journey

On October 22, 2021, I stood on the summit of Lobuche East, having conquered not just the mountain, but also the inner doubts and physical challenges that had threatened to hold me back. The journey was far from easy, but each challenge I faced on that climb became a lesson learned, a stepping stone for my future climbs.

That summit day taught me more than just the technicalities of climbing—it reinforced the importance of preparation, resilience, and the power of choice. It was a humbling experience and one that set the foundation for the many climbs that would follow. As I looked out over the Himalayas from the summit, I knew that I was no longer the novice climber who had started this journey. I was stronger, wiser, and ready for whatever the mountains would throw at me next.

Essential Wisdom for Aspiring Mountaineers

Always double-check your gear before setting off on an expedition. The mountains demand meticulous preparation and the right equipment—overlooking even the smallest detail can lead to significant challenges. Remember, the journey is as much about mental resilience and the choices you make as it is about physical endurance. Embrace each challenge as a lesson, and let it guide you toward becoming a stronger, wiser climber.

Sometimes, the hardest climb isn't the mountain ahead, but the choice between pushing forward or turning back.
